My daddy gave me a name

10 PAX showed up in spite of the threat of rain and guarantee of pain. We’ve been averaging 13.9 YTD, but after crunching the numbers, it appears that my Q’s are only averaging 11.6. Should I take that as a compliment or a diss?

We knew that the school administrators were off cruising the strip at an undisclosed beach location, FDIC is hibernating for summer, and Flow Rider, well, that’s been well-chronicled in the Hurricane Alley GroupMe thread.

I even snagged a Wednesday because I thought we might have some Powderkeg riff raff mosey over to the Alley. I was wrong, however, but I didn’t want to focus on who wasn’t there. Let the beatdown commence!

Also, special thanks to DJ Clarinet who assembled a playlist to help support this morning’s “Name” theme.

Devo – Names

Names are important. They shape our identity. They tell us who we are. Everything we do flows out of everything we are. In short, names are important because they influence everything that we do.

Most of us aren’t shaped like this by our physical name. My name means “manly,” and I think we all agree that’s not necessarily the case. We’re often shaped by other names–names that people put on us, names that our performance earns for us.

People put names on us–fat, lazy, weak, joke, disappointment, accident, too old, too young, etc. Our poor performance puts names on us–failure, addict, divorced, broke, screw-up, etc. If we aren’t careful, we will accept these names and it can lead us to despair.

Sometimes our good performance puts names on us–good, successful, able, hard-working, smart, strong, rich. These can be dangerous because they can lead to pride and self-righteousness.

The only person who can truly name us is our Heavenly Father. If we want to avoid the trap of crippling despair and devilish pride, we can only accept the names that He gives us. The cool thing about the names that He gives is that they all come from the work that He has done on our behalf. We didn’t earn them!

So what has God named us? Here are just a few…

  • Created by God
  • Loved by God
  • Saved by God
  • Freed by God
  • Purposed by God
  • Sustained by God

These names shape who we are, and that’s important because everything we do flows out of everything we are. If we accept the negative names as our identity, we will only perpetuate the despair/pride cycles. But if we accept the names that God has given us, we can become the men He created us to be.

  • When we understand we are…
    • Created by God – We can value our lives and treat others with honor and respect.
    • Loved by God – We can do the right things not because of what we will gain but because of what we already have.
    • Saved by God – We can live with hope that goes beyond this lifetime.
    • Freed by God – We can live lives without guilt or shame.
    • Purposed by God – We can live lives that make an impact in the lives of others.
    • Sustained by God – We can be confident that He will provide for us in any situation.

What names have you accepted for yourself? Are you believing what the world says about you? Are you believing what your past mistakes are saying about you? Are you believing what your best moments are saying about you? Or, are you allowing your real dad to give you your names and allowing those names to flow through everything you do?
